Why Here for Your Honeymoon

Bali is the most spiritually charged honeymoon destination in Asia — a Hindu island in the world's largest Muslim nation, where temple ceremonies, rice terrace walks, and volcanic sunrise hikes sit alongside world-class cliff-top resorts overlooking the Indian Ocean. Uluwatu's Bulgari and COMO Shambhala Estate near Ubud represent two completely different but equally extraordinary Bali experiences.

Is This Right for You?

Bali for Honeymooners

Perfect for you if…

  • 1Couples who want exotic culture, wellness, and beach in one destination
  • 2Yoga and spa enthusiasts — Bali invented the boutique wellness retreat
  • 3Those who want something genuinely different from a resort bubble
  • 4Surfers — the Bukit Peninsula has world-class waves for all levels
  • 5Couples who want exceptional value for luxury accommodation

Skip it if…

  • 1Visiting June–August Kuta/Seminyak — it's essentially Ibiza with temples
  • 2You want guaranteed solitude — Bali is genuinely popular
  • 3You're visiting November–March (wet season, flooding in low areas)
  • 4Package-resort beach simplicity is all you want
  • 5The 15-hour flight feels excessive for a 7-night trip

What to Do

Top 5 Romantic Experiences in Bali

🌅
01

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

A 2am wake-up, a 1.5h hike to the active volcano rim, and watching the sunrise over the caldera lake and distant Rinjani while drinking coffee brewed over volcanic steam. The most memorable dawn in Southeast Asia.

💡 Insider tip

Book through your hotel rather than a random guide tout. The 2am departure from Ubud is brutal — make sure it's an accredited guide with proper equipment.

$40–$80 per person (guide)
🌾
02

Sunrise Rice Terrace Walk (Tegallalang)

Walking the UNESCO-listed rice terraces of Tegallalang at 6am — before the drone photographers and the selfie sticks. The layered green geometry in morning mist is one of the great visual experiences in Asia.

💡 Insider tip

The best alternative is Jatiluwih — further from Ubud but larger, less visited, and genuinely more beautiful in morning light.

Free (nominal donation to farmers)
🕌
03

Uluwatu Temple Kecak Fire Dance at Sunset

The ancient sea temple on a 70m cliff above the Indian Ocean, with the kecak fire dance performed as the sun sets into the sea below. The most atmospheric cultural experience in Bali.

💡 Insider tip

Arrive 45 minutes early for good cliff-edge seats. The performance begins at sunset — actual timing varies with the season. Check with your hotel.

$15–$20 per person
💆
04

COMO Shambhala Estate Wellness Retreat

4 nights at the definitive Balinese wellness estate — Ayurvedic consultations, jungle-stream walks, meditation pavilions, and the most comprehensive spa program in Asia. Transformative.

💡 Insider tip

Book the Ayurvedic consultation before arrival — the treatment plan takes 2–3 days to fully develop and you want maximum time to absorb the program.

$700–$1,500/night
🏄
05

Surf Lesson at Padang Padang or Bingin (Bukit)

The Bukit Peninsula's reef breaks — Uluwatu, Bingin, Padang Padang — are some of the most consistent and beautiful surf spots in Asia. Beginner-appropriate breaks are at Seminyak and Medewi.

💡 Insider tip

Beginners: Seminyak beach surf schools. For intermediate-advanced: Bingin and Impossibles are extraordinary. Never surf Uluwatu without a local guide — the reef entry is dangerous.

$40–$80 per person (2h lesson)

Where to Stay

Areas of Bali for Honeymooners

Uluwatu (Bukit Peninsula)

Clifftop ocean views, surf, Bulgari resort

The limestone cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula drop 70m to the Indian Ocean. Bulgari Resort, Alila Villas, and Six Senses are here. The most dramatic resort setting in Bali.

Ubud (Central Bali)

Culture, wellness, rice terraces, jungle

The cultural heart of Bali. Temple ceremonies, gamelan music, COMO Shambhala Estate, and the rice terraces of Tegallalang. The best base for couples who want culture alongside luxury.

Seminyak / Canggu

Beach bars, sunset, surf, restaurants

The fashionable beach strip. Best restaurants and sunset bars in Bali. More social and urban than Uluwatu. Good for couples who want beach life mixed with a restaurant scene.

Nusa Penida / Lembongan

Snorkeling, manta rays, day escape

The islands southeast of Bali have the best snorkeling (manta rays, mola-mola fish). Crystal Bay and Manta Point are two of the finest snorkel sites in Southeast Asia. A day trip or 2-night escape.

Expert Advice

Insider Tips for Your Bali Honeymoon

01

Combine Ubud and Uluwatu — they're only 90 minutes apart

The perfect Bali honeymoon: 3 nights Ubud (culture, wellness, rice terraces) + 4 nights Uluwatu (clifftop ocean resort, sunset, surf). Two completely different Balis in one trip.

02

Book a private driver for the whole trip

A trusted private driver in Bali costs $50–$80/day and solves every logistical challenge. Ask your hotel for their recommended driver — the good ones book up fast in peak season.

03

Temple ceremony etiquette is important

If invited to a ceremony (or you find one): wear a sarong and sash (provided at temples), don't enter the inner sanctum unless invited, and don't point feet toward shrines. The Balinese appreciate respectful curiosity deeply.

04

Nusa Penida manta rays are a non-negotiable day trip

The manta rays at Manta Point off Nusa Penida are the largest (up to 4m) and most reliably present in Southeast Asia. A 45-minute fast boat from Sanur, 2 hours of snorkeling, return by 2pm.

05

Dry season means east Bali too — go beyond Ubud

The east Bali coast (Amed, Candidasa, Tulamben) is almost unknown to tourists, has the best diving in Bali (USAT Liberty wreck), and has extraordinary black sand beach views of Agung volcano.

What to Pack

Packing List for Bali

1
Sarong/sulu wrap (×2)
Required at all temples and expected at village ceremonies. Many temples provide them but having your own is respectful.
2
Mosquito repellent (DEET)
Dengue risk is real in Bali, especially in wet season. Even in dry season, apply at dusk.
3
Reef-safe sunscreen
Nusa Penida marine park and Manta Point have reef conservation rules
4
Light rain jacket
Ubud gets afternoon downpours even in dry season — pack a packable shell
5
Underwater camera
Manta Point snorkeling and the Liberty wreck dive are extraordinary photography opportunities
6
Cash (Indonesian Rupiah)
Local warungs, rice terrace entry, and small villages are cash-only. ATMs in Seminyak and Ubud are plentiful.

Food & Drink

What You'll Eat in Bali

Nasi goreng (fried rice — Bali's national breakfast), babi guling (Balinese roast suckling pig — the finest version is at Ibu Oka in Ubud), satay lilit (Balinese minced fish satay), black rice pudding with coconut cream for breakfast, and fresh coconut water everywhere. The best single meal in Bali is at Locavore in Ubud — contemporary Balinese with impeccable seasonal ingredients. Warning: Ubud health food culture is also extraordinary — the smoothie bowls and raw food at Sayuri or Clear are genuinely worth exploring.

Practical Guide

Getting to Bali

✈️

Getting There

Fly to Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Direct flights from London (14h via Singapore — Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific via HK). No direct Europe–Bali flights except occasional charter from Amsterdam. From Australia: 6h direct. From Singapore: 2.5h. Domestic transport: hire a private driver from the airport ($15–$25 to Seminyak, $25–$35 to Ubud, $30–$40 to Uluwatu).

📍

Where to Stay

Uluwatu/Bukit (clifftop ocean resort area, best views). Ubud (cultural and wellness centre). Seminyak/Canggu (beach bars, surf, restaurants). Nusa Penida/Lembongan (snorkeling day trips). A classic 10-night honeymoon: Ubud 3 nights → Uluwatu 5 nights → Nusa Penida day trip → final night in Seminyak before departure.

📅

When to Go

May–September is the dry season and the correct time to visit. July–August is peak (crowded, more expensive). June and September are the sweet spots: dry, warm, fewer tourists. Avoid November–March unless you embrace the lush green and don't mind daily afternoon rain.
