Book your seaplane with your room, not after
Seaplanes sell out months in advance for peak season. If you leave it late, you'll be on a 2-hour speedboat when your resort is a 25-min seaplane away.
Ask for an eastward-facing villa
Sunrise over the Indian Ocean from your private deck, directly into the lagoon. Most couples default to "best view" — specify direction.
Bring an underwater camera, not a GoPro
GoPros are fine but an Olympus TG-7 or similar gives you 4K without extra housing. The Maldivian water is so clear even phone cameras work at 2m depth.
The half-board vs full-board decision matters more here
Unlike city hotels, you cannot easily go off-property for meals. Full-board at $200–$400/day per couple is expensive but avoiding the restaurant bill anxiety is genuinely liberating.

Getting There
Fly to Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. From there, your resort arranges either a seaplane transfer (20–45 min, spectacular — book with your room) or a speedboat (45–120 min depending on atoll). Seaplanes run daylight hours only: arrive before 3pm if your resort is a seaplane away.
Where to Stay
North Malé Atoll (most accessible, 20-min speedboat), South Malé Atoll (45-min speedboat, quieter), Baa Atoll (UNESCO biosphere, 25-min seaplane, best for mantas), Noonu/Raa (35–45 min seaplane, most exclusive — Soneva Jani territory).
When to Go
November–April is dry season — flat seas, excellent visibility, no rain, peak prices. May–October brings the SW monsoon — cheaper rates by 30–50%, occasional rain (short, tropical), but South Ari and Baa atolls have whale sharks and mantas in peak numbers.
