The Verdict
Worth it for your honeymoon?
If the Matterhorn is on your honeymoon bucket list, the Mont Cervin Palace is the most civilised place to watch it change colour at sunrise. Open since 1851 — Zermatt's oldest hotel — the Mont Cervin sits at the heart of the car-free village, a short walk from the Gornergrat railway and from everything worth eating in town. 154 rooms split across the historic Palace building and the connected Residence, with a large underground connection to the Mont Cervin Spa (2,000 m² and arguably the best pool in Zermatt). Rooms facing south look directly at the 4,478-metre north face of the Matterhorn — book one, and plan your honeymoon breakfast around its 7am alpenglow. It's a grand, slightly formal, deeply classical mountain hotel: not the trendiest in town (that's The Omnia), but the one that feels most like a proper European honeymoon.

Room Recommendation
Which room to book
Book a Junior Suite Matterhorn View in the main Palace building. South-facing, balcony, uninterrupted view of the peak from bed. The upper floors (5th and 6th) have the cleanest sightlines over Zermatt's low chalet rooftops. For a statement suite, the Royal Penthouse Cervin on the 6th floor has a private terrace and the single best Matterhorn view in any hotel in the village.

Day by Day
Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary
Arrival & Matterhorn sunset
Train from Zurich (Glacier Express or direct via Visp, about 3.5 hours; cars must be left at Täsch). Zermatt's e-taxi meets you at the station. Settle in; head to the hotel's Capri Lounge for aperitifs as the Matterhorn turns pink, then dinner at Le Restaurant with a Fendant white from the Valais.
Gornergrat sunrise, spa afternoon
Pre-dawn walk to Gornergrat railway (4 minutes from hotel) for the sunrise train — the classic 7am ride up to 3,089 m with the Matterhorn lit red in front of you. Breakfast on the mountain, then back for a couples' ritual at the Mont Cervin Spa.
Ski the Matterhorn paradise
Hotel ski butler kits you out; shuttle to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lifts. Ski across into Italy for lunch at a Cervinia rifugio, then back. Evening at Le Petit Cervin — the hotel's intimate 30-seat fine-dining room, Michelin-recommended.
Horse-drawn carriage & heritage walk
The Mont Cervin operates its own horse-drawn carriage (Zermatt is car-free, so horses and e-taxis are the only options). Afternoon carriage ride through the village, stopping at the Matterhorn Museum and the mountaineers' cemetery. Dinner at Myoko, the hotel's Japanese grotto, for a change of pace.
Snowshoeing to Sunnegga
Guided snowshoe morning from Sunnegga — the easy-access ski sector above the village — with a pre-arranged fondue lunch in a mountain chalet. Return for a long afternoon in the Mont Cervin's 30-metre indoor pool and couples' steam.
Klein Matterhorn + spa night
Up the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift to 3,883 m — the highest cable-car station in Europe, walkable in December onward with the panorama terrace. Back for a full spa evening. Private dinner in your suite arranged by the concierge.
Slow breakfast & Glacier Express home
Long breakfast on the Palace terrace with a final Matterhorn view. Late checkout; the hotel transfers you to Zermatt station for the Glacier Express to Zurich, or a private transfer door-to-door.
Honest Assessment
What to know before you book
Zermatt is car-free — you must leave your vehicle at Täsch (the last accessible village) and take the shuttle train. Factor this into arrival timing, especially with ski gear.
Matterhorn view is highly dependent on weather. Aim for stays of 5+ nights in February-March for the best chance of clear mornings; early January can be overcast for days at a time.
The Mont Cervin is a large hotel (154 rooms) with a busy public area. Couples seeking a small, hushed alpine retreat may prefer The Omnia or CERVO nearby — both smaller, though both also pricier per night.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the Matterhorn view really worth paying extra for?
Unequivocally yes. The hotel's north-facing rooms are lovely but the whole point of staying in Zermatt is to wake up to that mountain. Budget the Matterhorn-view room category, not the standard one — you'll look at it every morning for a week.
Mont Cervin Palace, The Omnia, or CERVO?
Three very different honeymoon options in Zermatt. Mont Cervin is classical grand hotel in the village centre. The Omnia is boutique, design-led, on a rock face above the village with a lift up. CERVO is chalet-luxe with the best restaurant scene in town. For first-time honeymooners who want heritage and scale, Mont Cervin wins.
Do we need to ski?
No. Zermatt is full of non-ski couples — the Gornergrat railway, winter hiking paths, ice skating, horse-drawn carriages and the spa are all enough. The hotel concierge arranges day trips without skis, including snowshoe outings and the Klein Matterhorn cable car.
How do we get there from Zurich?
Train to Visp then local connection to Zermatt (3-3.5 hours). The Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt (or reverse) is the iconic combination if you're doing both destinations. Private transfer from Zurich is possible as far as Täsch; from there you transfer to a shuttle train or an e-taxi into Zermatt.
What's the spa situation?
The Mont Cervin Spa covers 2,000 m² with a 30-metre indoor pool, saunas, steam rooms, and 7 treatment rooms. Couples' private suite available for 120-minute rituals. Spa is included for guests; treatments charged separately. Quieter in the mornings — book 9am-11am for the pool to yourselves.
Dress code?
Le Petit Cervin and Le Restaurant expect smart-casual to jacket-preferred for dinner. Myoko (the Japanese grotto) and the Capri Lounge are relaxed. Pack at least one jacket and one dinner dress — Zermatt is informal by day but Mont Cervin is dressy by evening.
