The Verdict

Worth it for your honeymoon?

The Kulm is St. Moritz's original hotel — opened in 1864 by Johannes Badrutt, the man who invented alpine winter tourism when he dared four English guests to come back in January. It was the first building in Switzerland to have electric light (1878), and it hosted the finish of the 1928 and 1948 Winter Olympics. For honeymooners, the Kulm is the quieter, more old-money alternative to the Palace across the park: similar heritage, broadly similar price, but calmer public rooms, a gentler dining culture and the best south-facing lake panorama in the Engadine. The Country Club restaurant — an Alpine clubhouse redesigned by Norman Foster — is the standout meal, and the Kulm Spa is one of the few places in town where a suite and the pool feel genuinely private. Choose the Kulm if you want St. Moritz's heritage without the performance of the Palace lobby.

Room Recommendation

Which room to book

Expert Pick
from $700–$3,000/night range

Book a Deluxe Junior Suite Lake View in the main historic wing. These are around 55 m² with separate sitting area, generous bathroom, and floor-to-ceiling windows directly over Lake St. Moritz. For a splurge, the Pontresina Suite and the Segantini Suite are the two most romantic corner suites in the hotel — both have wood-burning fireplaces and the best lake sunrise in the Engadine.

Day by Day

Your 7-night honeymoon itinerary

1

Arrival & quiet heritage tour

Transfer from Zurich (3-3.5 hours). Settle in; take the Kulm concierge's short heritage walk — the original Badrutt dining room, the site of the 1878 first electric light, and the ice rink where Olympic speed-skating was held. Dinner at The Grand Restaurant, the hotel's main dining room, followed by a nightcap at the wood-paneled Altitude Bar.

2

Morning ski on Corviglia, spa afternoon

The Kulm's ski butler kits you out and you board the Chantarella funicular just below the hotel. Lunch on-mountain, then back for a couples treatment at Kulm Spa. Evening at the Country Club — Norman Foster's glass-walled clubhouse, wood-fired Italian menu.

3

Cresta Run & long Italian lunch

The Cresta Run starts a two-minute walk from the hotel; the Kulm is the 'official' Cresta hotel (St. Moritz Tobogganing Club clubhouse is on the property). Morning introductory ride for both of you, followed by a long lunch at Sunny Bar, the Cresta's bar-restaurant, oldest sports bar in the Alps.

4

Muottas Muragl & stargazing dinner

Funicular up to Muottas Muragl for the full Upper Engadine panorama — three lakes, all the 4,000-m peaks, and usually a herd of ibex. Dinner at the mountain restaurant, with a shared bottle of Swiss Pinot Noir, before a quiet night back at the Kulm.

5

Bernina Express + Poschiavo

Full-day excursion on the red panoramic train across the Bernina Pass to Italian-speaking Poschiavo for a slow lunch, returning by late afternoon. Evening fondue at Chesa al Parc, the Kulm's own chalet restaurant on the park.

6

Curling, skating, and the spa

Private curling lesson on the Kulm's outdoor rink (the rink is historic — Olympic curling was staged here). Afternoon: Kulm Spa, 2,000 m² with indoor/outdoor pool running into the snow, couples' treatment suite.

7

Lake walk & departure

Breakfast on the south terrace, a last walk around the frozen Lake St. Moritz (40 minutes), late checkout and private transfer back to Zurich.

Honest Assessment

What to know before you book

!

The Kulm is a large hotel (164 rooms) with a family wing — request lake-view rooms in the historic main building, away from the family corridor, for the most romantic atmosphere.

!

The hotel closes twice a year (April-June and October-November) for the off-seasons — confirm operating dates before locking in non-refundable flights.

!

Dining is dressy: jacket expected at The Grand Restaurant after 7pm. Not as theatrical as Badrutt's but smarter than Andermatt or Gstaad — pack accordingly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Kulm or Badrutt's Palace — which is better for a honeymoon?

They are 150 metres apart and architecturally rivals since 1896. The Palace is more theatrical, more Champagne-and-fur, more expensive. The Kulm is calmer, with a better spa layout for couples and a quieter bar scene. If you want to see and be seen, book the Palace. If you want the same heritage with more breathing room, book the Kulm.

What about the Cresta Run?

The Kulm is effectively the Cresta's home hotel — the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club is on the property, and the Sunny Bar is the Cresta's clubhouse. Introductory guest rides can be arranged through the hotel from late December through February. Minimum age 16, no back issues.

Is summer worth it at the Kulm?

Yes — the Engadine is genuinely spectacular in July and August, and the Kulm has an outdoor tennis center, golf access and lake activities. Rates are 40-50% lower than February. It lacks the winter theatre but delivers a much calmer, greener honeymoon.

How does the spa compare to the Palace?

The Kulm Spa covers 2,000 m² over two floors, with a heated indoor-outdoor pool (swim from inside out into the snow), a salt-water pool, and five treatment rooms. Smaller than the Palace's 2,800 m² but often quieter — you can frequently have the pool to yourselves at sunrise.

Can we book dining at the Country Club if we're not staying?

Yes, the Country Club is open to outside guests, but Kulm residents get priority booking. Specifically request a window table on reservation — the views down to Lake St. Moritz are the whole point.

How do we get there from Zurich?

The Kulm arranges private car transfers (approx. 3 hours 15 minutes) or luggage-forwarding rail bookings via the Glacier/Bernina Express. The train is slower (4-4.5 hours) but one of the great honeymoon journeys in Europe.
